Hands parted, braided, twisted and sculpted hair into extraordinary forms. And among the tools that made these acts of creativity possible was the Ìlàrí — the traditional three-pronged African wooden comb.

Across generations, the Ìlàrí, also known as Ìlàrùn, has been more than a grooming object. Carved from wood and shaped by hand, it belongs to a long tradition of African artistry, femininity and adornment.

Its relationship with the Ori — the head — gives it particular resonance.

In Yorùbá culture, the head carries significance beyond physical appearance, while elaborate hairstyles have long communicated beauty, identity, status, occasion and belonging. The humble wooden comb became an instrument through which these magnificent forms could be created.

Ìlàrí is Abélà’s olfactory homage to this enduring object and the beauty rituals it remembers.

The fragrance begins with the elemental smokiness of wood tar, evoking carved and darkened wood, softened by the familiar richness of shea butter. Moroccan spice introduces heat and movement — extending the story beyond one geography towards a wider conversation with the African continent.

As the composition deepens, musk, vanilla, amber and tobacco gather around its woody core, creating an atmosphere that is warm, smoky, sensual and quietly resolute.

There is something tactile about Ìlàrí.

Carved wood. Shea-softened hands. Hair being patiently worked. The warmth of skin. An object passed between generations until the material itself seems capable of remembering those who held it.
