BÀLÁGÀ – Blossom in Maturity
Eau de Parfum
The Art of Abélà® — Culture Series
OLFACTORY WORK 002
When the Boy Becomes a Man. When the Girl Becomes a Woman.
There are moments in every culture when growing older and becoming an adult are understood to be two different things.
Bàlágà enters that space.
Its artistic territory is maturation: the passage from youth into a form of adulthood recognised not merely by age, but through responsibility, conduct, knowledge, and one’s changing relationship to community.
For Deola Abélà Inyang, this transition became an olfactory question.
What does becoming smell like?
Not adulthood performed through brute force. Not maturity reduced to hardness. But the complicated moment when innocence begins carrying responsibility; when experience changes the texture of a person; when the community no longer encounters merely the child it remembers, but begins to recognise the adult standing in front of it.
Bàlágà is Deola’s artistic interpretation of that passage through Afro-Baroque Perfumery®.
The fragrance holds seemingly contradictory materials together. Florals appear beside Kolanut. Orris and Rose encounter Coffee, Woods and restrained animality. Greenness gives way to increasingly dry, textured, and grounded forms.
The movement is deliberate. Something cultivated remains from youth, but another register has entered: bitterness, depth, appetite, restraint, experience.
Kolanut becomes particularly important within the work. Across several West African cultures, it carries social and ceremonial significance around hospitality, relationship and gathering. Here it is not used to reproduce a ceremony, but as artistic material — a bitter, culturally resonant interruption within an otherwise beautiful composition.
Bàlágà therefore does not announce: Here is a man. Here is a woman.
It asks something more demanding: What had to happen before they could become who they are?
CULTURAL REFERENCE
Bàlágà is inspired by the traditional marriage rites of western Nigeria’s Yoruba heritage — a culture full of folklore, colour and pageantry, extending to its traditional courtship, engagement and marriage ceremonies.
In keeping with tradition, once both genders have attained maturity, the man is expected to seek out a blossoming woman, playfully referenced as a flower coming into bloom. Upon beholding her beauty, he seeks the permission of both his family and hers, followed by a formal introduction between families — a rite known as mo mi mo e, “know me, know you.”
Bàlágà is an olfactive interpretation of the essence and pageantry of this maturity story, carrying the rustic, ethnic living of the Yoruba people as remembered from the time of old.
OLFACTORY PALETTE
RITE OF PASSAGE — THE WELCOME
Kola Nut · Mandarin · Bergamot · Green Galbanum · Spice
The fragrance opens with the ceremonial offering of kolanut, a symbol of hospitality, respect, and social connection. Mandarin and bergamot illuminate the anticipation of a family introduction, while green galbanum and spice introduce the bitter, aromatic tension of experience. The welcome is more than a greeting. It opens the passage through which youthful affection may become a recognised commitment.
PUBERTY — THE BLOSSOMING
Orange Blossom · Narcissus · Damask Rose · Carnation · Orris · Jasmine · Ylang Ylang
A flourishing heart of flowers expresses the awakening of youth. Beauty, tenderness, and attraction unfold like a maiden coming into full bloom. The florals carry innocence and possibility, the cultivated brightness of an identity still taking shape. Within the cultural narrative, this blossoming evokes the young lovers whose affection has begun to mature into intention.
BECOMING — THE MATURITY
African Camwood · Frankincense · Myrrh · Labdanum · Benzoin · Patchouli · Sandalwood · Vanilla · Oakmoss · Amber · Agarwood · White Musk
The composition settles into the warmth of woods, resins, incense and musks. African camwood and patchouli lend an earthy, grounded character, while frankincense, myrrh and warm ambered resins introduce depth and ceremonial richness. Sandalwood, agarwood and soft musks leave an intimate, enduring presence.
Maturity emerges not as hardness, but as substance: the changed weight of someone whose identity is now accompanied by experience, responsibility and a recognised place within the community.
